LaRouche Activists Rip Cover off “Progressive” Democrats Supporting Ukraine War
In a dramatic intervention that quickly went viral, two young associates of the LaRouche Organization ripped the facade off self-proclaimed “Progressive Anti-War Democrats”, exposing their hypocrisy in supporting NATO’s war against Russia in Ukraine. At an Oct. 12 town meeting in the Bronx, New York, Kynan Thistlthwaite and Jose Vega demanded that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) answer for her support for the billions spent to fund the war. A video of the confrontation put out on Twitter has had more than 7.5 million views, and has been seen by millions more on news shows and social media.
Both Thistlethwaite and Vega demanded that AOC explain why she has voted repeatedly to send arms and weapons to Ukraine, when she and her colleagues known as “The Squad” parade around as opponents of the U.S. war machine. This puts us on the verge of nuclear war, Thistlethwaite said — “Why are you playing with the lives of American citizens?” Vega said he had initially supported her, saying “I believed in you”, that you would fight for the people you represent. “But you became the very thing you sought to fight against,” he added, hammering home the point that she has joined the war hawks in both parties.
What made their intervention particularly effective is that it coincided with the high-profile exodus from the Democratic Party of Tulsi Gabbard, a former Congresswoman and Presidential candidate. Both young men emphasized that Gabbard stated she left the Party because it has become a home for the warmoners. Vega told AOC, “Tulsi Gabbard has shown guts where you’ve shown cowardice.”
Gabbard responded to this intervention in several interviews, reiterating that she left the Party because of its rabid support for the war. In an interview with Fox-TV‘s Jesse Waters, she encouraged viewers to “pay attention to what those two young men were saying….We are sitting on the precipice of nuclear disaster.” She repeated what they said, that “nothing else matters if we are all destroyed in a nuclear war.” Later on Fox, host Tucker Carlson identified the two as the “real progressives”, unlike the fraud AOC.
In the video, AOC appears to be momentarily stunned by being hit with the truth, as was the small audience, which watched them in rapt attention. She refused to address the charges, responding only to accuse them of being “rude.” Glenn Greenwald pointed out this is an additional example of her hypocrisy, for when defending Antifa demonstrators who behaved violently during protests, she stated “Activists should be impolite.”
While some partisans are using this event to slam only the Democrats, LaRouche supporters continue to point out that support for the war has been bipartisan, with only a handful of Republican Congressmen voting against the bipartisan consensus. This is beginning to change, as polls show that nearly 50% of Republican voters oppose continued funding of Ukraine’s military and government operations. These numbers may rise, as former President Donald Trump has begun to call for negotiations on an end to the conflict.
